Vice President Biden Arrives on Nantucket for Thanksgiving

The quiet island of Nantucket just made the news again with the arrival of Vice President Biden and his family.

According to the Inquirer and Mirror, today "Air Force Two touched down at Nantucket Memorial Airport just after 11:30 Wednesday morning carrying Vice President Joe Biden and his family for their annual Thanksgiving holiday visit to the island.

The modified Boeing 757, which dwarfed the other small aircraft on the tarmac, landed in a thick fog as Secret Service agents and Nantucket police shooed away curious onlookers who had attempted to stop on Monohansett Road for a view of the plane.

Biden and his family were whisked away through the operations gate off Airport Road in an 11-car motorcade, and proceeded to their vacation home: the Washing Pond Road waterfront estate of Louis Susman, a significant contributor to President Barack Obama's campaign who was recently appointed ambassador to Great Britain."

This was no small surprise to this tiny island, located thirty miles out to sea. Vice President Biden spent his Thanksgiving on Nantucket with family last year as well. This is a family tradition for them, for more than 30 years. His arrival last year was more traditional though, the passenger ferry from Hyannis Port. This time around he is the Vice President of the United States. So it probably became a little more complicated. Yesterday, about seventeen Black SUV's arrived on the ferry. The Air Force Jets have been flying in and out of Nantucket airport for the last few days bringing in supplies and security paraphernalia. The security is tight over land, sea, and water.

According to the Inquirer and Mirror "For the past week, airport manager Al Peterson said the government has been flying C-17 cargo planes into Nantucket Memorial Airport to deliver specialized vehicles for Biden’s motorcade and other support equipment...The Federal Aviation Administration has issued a temporary flight restriction (TFR) within a three-nautical-mile radius over the northwest shore of the island which will restrict all aviation below 3,000 feet. The TFR, which will go into effect this morning and last until Nov. 30 at 5 p.m., is necessary for “VIP (Very Important Person) movement,” according to the FAA advisory."

We welcome you back Vice President Biden. Have a Turkey Day!
