Nantucket's Historic Century House Wins "Best of City"
Oldest continuously operating guesthouse on Nantucket Island MA receives international recognition by the International Restaurant and Hotel Awards
Nantucket Island, MA - January 13, 2008 - The oldest continuously operating guesthouse on Nantucket Island, Massachusetts joined several prestigious hotels & inns in receiving international recognition. Century House has provided accommodations for the island traveler since the middle 1800's and has been recognized by Frommers, Zagat.com, forbes.com and most recently appearing in Boston Herald, Upscale Living Magazine, Travel and Leisure, Boston Globe for its hospitality.
For decades the refined island visitor has singled out Century House as the place to base their Nantucket stay. Century House is itself part of Nantucket Island's history offering the same hospitality, at the prestigious Cliff Road location, that was only available to millionaires in the middle and late 19th century. Stackpole, renowned Nantucket historian and former director of the Peter Foulger Museum, Century House was built by a member of an old Nantucket family of Scottish roots, Captain Robert Calder. The historic Century House dates back to the Cliff Road land purchase in 1833. According to research performed by Edouard A. Stackpole, renowned Nantucket historian and former director of the Peter Foulger Museum, a member of an old Nantucket family of Scottish roots, Captain Robert Calder, built the Century House. Over the years, Capt. Calder took part in several long, successful voyages to hunt whale, and eventually completed the construction of the house in the early 1840's. It is said that Capt. Calder chose this site because of the privacy, the ocean breezes, the views, and the genuine serenity the location provided in the 1840's and still exhibits today.
